Linocut Printing
It has been a long time since I lino printed. It is something I had planned on getting back to before I lost my husband in 2022. Needless to say, I got a little sidetracked when that happened. But it feels so good to be getting back in the proverbial saddle! There is something magical about the process of making a drawing that becomes a viable print. It is a process that is very different to drawing or painting. It requires a different headspace. I had to remember to look differently.
On my first attempt I wasn’t in that headspace but I persevered, practiced on an offcut of lino and allowed my hands to remember the techniques and feel of the carving; the subtle dance of pressure and intent that guides the carving tools. I allowed my mind and eye to shift into the printmaking headspace and then magic happened!
I love the rawness, naive quality and immediacy of these first prints. No doubt I shall produce more ‘sophisticated’ prints in the future, but I think I will also always want to produce some prints that have this simplicity. They have an energy I enjoy that is like Primitivist woodcut prints from the turn of the last century that I studied in art school.
So, watch this space! More work to come and I am SO looking forward to the adventure!!
